  7. This version was the first public release of Chat. It was intended as an 
  8. extended beta program, and had a limited feature set and a rather clunky 
  9. editor.

  13. This is the second public release of Chat. There have been numerous 
  14. changes, as listed below:

  16.     Chat now allows monitoring multiple channels simultaneously.
  17.  
  18.     43/50 line mode is now supported on EGA/VGA cards.
  19.  
  20.     The editor has been greatly improved, and now features automatic
  21.     word-wrapping.
  22.  
  23.     Private messages may be sent between chat users.
  24.  
  25.     A list of chat users is now available.
  26.  
  27.     The communications routines are more reliable than in previous
  28.     releases.
  29.  
  30.     The help has been expanded greatly.
  31.  
  32.     The documentation is greatlty improved (believe it or not!)

  34.     Mouse support is more consistent.

  36. Known bugs:
  37.  
  38.     Chat uses Novell's IPX protocol for sending messages between 
  39.     systems. This protocol does not guarantee that messages will be 
  40.     delivered. I have never personally seen a packet fail to be 
  41.     delivered in this program, but it is possible. This could result in 
  42.     messages not being sent, or the user list being incomplete. Unless 
  43.     your network is particularly flaky, however, I doubt you will ever 
  44.     see a missed packet.

  46.     Chat has a limited number of buffers for handling cummunications. If 
  47.     a large number of users are logged on to chat, it is possible that 
  48.     packets will be dropped, resulting in symptoms like the above. 
  49.     Again, I have never seen this problem arise in practice, but Chat 
  50.     has not been extensively tested with more than ten users. However, 
  51.     if you have slow workstations or a large number of users, you may 
  52.     experience lost messages.

  54.     The program does not handle low memory conditions very well. If Chat 
  55.     runs out of memory, it will display a message explaining that it has 
  56.     run out, and quit immediately. It requires approximately 300K to run 
  57.     in initially.

  61. There are two features planned for the next release of Chat:

  63.     Private channels:
  64.  
  65.         The next release will allow users to open private channels. Only 
  66.         invited users may enter these channels. You can thus have 
  67.         private discussions without worrying about "lurkers" 
  68.         eavesdropping.

  70.     Configurability:

  72.         The next release will be somewhat more configurable, 
  73.         particularly the communications system.
